Meet the Seagate Backup Plus Slim, a portable hard drive based on the tried-and-true ST2000LM007 that was introduced in the first quarter of 2016.
The Backup Plus Slim (STHN1000402) is available in 1TB and 2TB sizes and in light blue, black, or brushed metal. These drives are available for $60 and $80 on Amazon.
The Backup Plus Slim is a USB 3.0 portable hard drive with an adaptor for the older USB 2.0 standard. It’s roughly the size of an SD card, but considerably thinner, so it fits easily in a pocket or handbag.
The drive is covered by a one-year limited guarantee, which is standard for portable hard disc drives (that I know of). If you don’t need to protect your data from physical damage, a three-year guarantee will suffice.
There are also two software packages included: Seagate Dashboard and Seagate Media Plus. The first allows you to manage all of your discs and backup data on your computer, as well as providing basic information about each one (such as how much space they take up).
The Backup Plus Slim is powered by a single AA battery, which should last roughly two years under typical conditions (as we saw in our review of the old ST2000LM007).
Pros and Cons:
• ADOBE CREATIVE AND MYLIO CREATE
• A little above-average performer.
• TWO-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY
• It will be more expensive if you only require storage.
One has to wonder why Seagate has launched a new edition of Backup Plus. It uses the same three-year-old drive as its predecessor and adds little to the table, especially considering the somewhat higher price tag – albeit Mylio Create and Adobe CC software are included.
Mylio software from Seagate is a cloud storage solution that enables customers to save and view data from any device. It also allows you to share files with friends, family, and coworkers. You may accomplish this by either uploading the files using a web browser or sending them directly from your mobile phone to their email account.
Seagate Media Plus software is included with the Backup Plus Slim. This enables you to backup all of your vital data on various desktops and mobile devices, such as Windows PCs, Macs, Android phones and tablets, and iPhones. You may additionally encrypt your data using 256-bit AES encryption technology for enhanced protection.
The Backup Plus Slim is an excellent product at a low price, but it has one big flaw: it does not support the new USB Type-C connection standard for charging smartphones and tablets. So, if you have a smartphone that supports USB Type-C charging, the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB is a better option than this one.
The Backup Plus Slim does not distinguish out in any way; its design is straightforward and utilitarian, and it makes no attempt to win any awards. Seagate chose a polycarbonate chassis with a thin brushed metal overlay. There’s not much to look at here but the Seagate logo and a white status light.
A rubber grip on the front and a broader rubber ring around the body make it easy to grasp and use for extended periods of time.
A single NAND flash memory chip, hidden beneath a detachable metal shell, powers the drive. This may be accessed using the key placed at the bottom of the disc – according to Seagate, this will be handy if you wish to upgrade your drive or alter its operating system in the future.
The metal shell also protects the flash memory chip from physical harm, such as being dropped on a hard surface. After you’ve removed the lid, you’ll notice two screws holding it in place.
The Mylio software is pre-installed on the drive, but you may also download extra software from Seagate’s website (see ‘Additional resources’ below). Mylio comes in two flavours: Mylio Create and Mylio Pro.
BENCHMARKS FOR PERFORMANCE
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim performed as follows in our benchmark testing:
On CrystalDiskMark (write), 141MBps (read); 137MBps (write).144MB/s (read, 256MB); 137MBps (write) (write, 256mb)
As previously noted, this device makes use of the obsolete ST2000LM007 drive, which has two 1TB platters spinning at 5,400 RPM and 128MB cache. Surprisingly, purchasing that drive individually costs more than purchasing it as part of the Backup Plus Slim. It’s surreal, but it’s true.
Although the Backup Plus Slim does not support USB Type-C charging, it is somewhat less expensive than the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB, which does.
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim is a portable hard drive. It’s ideal for this because it’s light and slim, allowing you to quickly put it into your pocket or purse and carry it with you when you travel. The Backup Plus Slim is also compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
If you’re searching for a drive that supports USB Type-C charging or one with more storage space, the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB is a great option. It’s excellent for storing movies, music, and documents – but only if your smartphone supports USB Type-C charging (which is likely to be all of them).

The rivalry is strong.
While Seagate’s 5TB portable hard drive has no rivals, the situation is very different for lower capacity products, including Seagate’s earlier models.
The previous Backup Plus Slim, for example, costs $45 and $60 for 1TB and 2TB units, respectively. Another Seagate series, Expansion, is similarly priced, with prices ranging between $40 and $65 for equal capacities (note: all quoted prices are from Amazon.com, and correct at the time of writing).
Western Digital and Toshiba are slightly more expensive. Special mention should be made of Silicon Power, which sells a 4TB shockproof and waterproof external hard disc drive for $110 – the same price as the new Backup Plus Slim.
Although the competition is tough, the Seagate Backup Plus Slim is an excellent pick for a portable hard drive. It isn’t ideal, but the price and capacity are difficult to beat.
If you need a drive with a larger capacity than the 2TB model, you might want to consider the Seagate 4TB Expansion or the Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB.
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable hard drive is an improvement over previous models from the firm and has several benefits over its competitors. It’s small, lightweight, and fashionable, making it ideal for slipping into a pocket or bag and taking with you on your travels.
The fact that it contains two 1TB drives means that it has plenty of storage capacity – if you need more, choose one of Seagate’s bigger drives (such as the 5TB). The Backup Plus Slim may be used as a portable hard drive; it has ample storage space for movies, music, and documents.
Although it does not support USB Type-C charging, it is significantly less expensive than the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB, which does.
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim is available for $99.99 from Amazon.com, which is a reasonable price given its capabilities.
The Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable hard drive is currently the finest USB-C external hard disc on the market (July 2018).
